The flamingo officially became the unofficial mascot of the 1989 Summer School. From brochure artwork to branded t-shirts, flamingos were everywhere—including in the arms of attendees’ children. Stuffed pink flamingos were handed out, adding a bit of whimsy to the otherwise serious business of growth management and environmental permitting.
But the flamingos weren’t the only thing multiplying—so were the people. The Summer School was beginning to evolve into more than just a professional conference; it was becoming a family vacation tradition. Attendees brought their spouses, their kids, and their beach gear, making Marco Island the annual July destination for both work and rest. With children’s programs, spouse events, and networking dinners, the balance of family and professional growth became a defining feature.
And while the atmosphere was casual, the collaboration was anything but. Groundbreaking legislation took root here, scribbled on napkins and sketched out between breakout sessions. Agency leaders, legal experts, engineers, and consultants sat side-by-side not only to learn—but to solve problems together. This was where Florida’s environmental permitting policy was shaped—not just discussed.
